Discovering Seochon : A Hidden Gem of Seoul

Seochon, a quaint neighborhood nestled near Gyeongbokgung, is one of Seoul’s best-kept secrets. While Bukchon Hanok Village gets all the fame, Seochon has quietly become the go-to spot for those seeking authenticity, local culture, and peaceful charm—especially for the MZ generation looking for a deeper connection to Seoul’s traditional roots.

A Stroll Through Seochon: Local Vibes and Timeless Beauty

From Gyeongbokgung Station, Seochon is a short walk away, and as you meander through its narrow alleyways, you’ll feel the rhythm of the neighborhood slow down. Unlike other tourist-heavy areas, Seochon offers a rare glimpse into real Seoul life. The old hair salons, retro diners from the ’80s and ’90s, and Hanok cafés exude a nostalgic charm that seems to have frozen time.

In the spring, the neighborhood is alive with the soft pink hues of cherry blossoms and the scent of traditional tea wafting from Hanok teahouses. The peacefulness here is a breath of fresh air, where each corner invites you to slow down and soak in the local beauty.

Unveiling Seochon’s Local Food Gems

No visit to Seochon is complete without stopping by Tongin Market (통인시장). Famous for its Yeopjeon lunchbox (traditional brass coins to exchange for food), this market is a treasure trove of flavors. You can sample dishes like crispy gireum tteokbokki, savory jeon, and plenty of other Korean street foods. The market is a popular stop for hikers coming down from Mt. Inwangsan, who often enjoy a post-hike snack of bindaetteok and makgeolli.

Just across the market, you’ll find the legendary Hyoja Bakery (효자베이커리), a local staple known for its classic breads and pastries. Nothing fancy here—just warm, comforting treats like milk bread and red bean buns, perfect for a quick bite as you explore.

Nearby, the Sejong Village Food Culture Street (세종마을 음식문화거리) offers even more food options—from neighborhood diners to hidden gems known only to locals. No chain stores, no tourist traps—just honest food and timeless vibes.

Art, Craft, and Serendipity in Seochon

While wandering the streets, I was lucky enough to stumble upon Iium Gallery (이이엄), a charming space dedicated to Korean teaware and ceramic art. Inside, I had the privilege of admiring the stunning metal teaware by artist Hye Gye Son Hye Ji. Her designs are a perfect blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern elegance, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a few pieces for myself. These delicate teapots and cups will soon be available on ArtlierJib, and I’m excited to share them with you.

But the discoveries didn’t stop there.

Dodo Studio: A Hidden Crafting Paradise

After leaving Iium, I happened upon a small, tucked-away ceramics studio —Dodo Studio (도도공방). This quaint space felt like an artist’s secret haven. Inside, I found the most adorable moon jar teacup set (달항아리 찻잔세트), so charming and carefully crafted that I had to bring it home with me. The delicate, round shape of the moon jar captures the peaceful spirit of Korean tea culture, while the artist’s stylish and warm personality made the experience even more memorable.
